Marc Bolan & T.Rex - "Metal Guru"

T.Rexの日本で最初に紹介された曲は「Metal Guru」ではないでしょうか？そんな記憶があります。これも「ノリ」がいい恋の歌。歌詞にちょっぴりジョークも入れてあり、楽しめる曲です。 当時、デビッド・ボウィなどと共にグラム・ロックと呼ばれていましたが、T.Rexにはオリジナリティーがありました。短命でしたが、いつまでも記憶に残るグループです。

Mary Hopkin - Goodbye

「アップルの歌姫」メリー・ホプキンです。「悲しき天使 Those Were the Days 」に続く、レノン/マッカートニー作詞作曲の第2作で全英シングルチャートで第2位になりました。レノン/マッカートニーのシンプルで美しいメロディとさわやかに恋人と別れる内容の歌詞はメリー・ホプキンの澄んだ歌声とマッチしています。時が過ぎて忘れられてしまうには惜しい歌です。

Grand Funk Railroad - We're An American Band

アメリカン・ハード・ロックの原点のようなバンド、グランド・ファンク・レイルロードの1973年のヒット曲です。内容はバンドの旅巡業を歌っています。アメリカの「ロック・バンドはこんなもんだぜ」といった感じで、凄みのあるボーカルと確かな演奏力で聴かせます。 グランド・ファンク・レイルロードは他に、「ハートブレイカー」やオールディーズのカバー「ロコモーション」もお薦めです。

Harry Nilsson - Everybody's Talkin'

1969年の曲。ジョン・ボイトとダスティン・ホフマン主演の映画「真夜中のカウボーイ」で印象的に使われた曲です。 1967年にアメリカのABCで放映された「Everybody's Talking」という人気クイズ番組から、題名をとっているかも？ 「みんなが俺のことを噂してるが、俺はお日様が当たるところへ行くのさ。」というようなドロップアウトの歌です。1969年は映画「イージー・ライダー」が公開された年で、規制の枠から開放されたいと思う当時の若者の心象を歌っています。 ネルソンには他に、マライア・キャリーもカバーしている「Without You」という名曲があります。

Creedence Clearwater Revival - Have you ever seen the rain?

邦題は「雨を見たかい？」 「晴れた日に降る雨。」「太陽は冷たく、雨は激しく」歌詞の一部です。ボブ・ディランの「A Hard Rains Goina Fall」も思い起こさせます。 ベトナム戦争中に多様された「ナパーム弾」はゲル化油脂焼夷弾で「水のように煌きながら降り注ぐ雨」はそのスラングです。 「ずっと、こんな調子さ。どうだい、もう雨を見たかい？晴れた日に。水のようにキラキラ降り注ぐ雨をさ。遅かれ早かれだって、まったく、こんなこと何時になったら終わるんだい。」（歌詞要意約） この歌を平気でコマーシャル・ソングに使ったどこかの国の自動車メーカーと広告代理店がありましたね？確かにコマーシャル・ソングに使いたくなるほど印象深い歌ですが…。

Aphrodite's Child - Rain and Tears - End of the World LIVE

1968年にヨーロッパでヒットしたシングル曲です。アルバム「End of the World」にも入っていました。アフロディテス・チャイルドは知らなくてもヴァンゲリスかデミス・ルソスはご存知かもしれません。特にヴァンゲリスは映画「炎のランナー」、「ブレードランナー」、「1492 コロンブス」やテレビドキュメンタリー「COSMOS(コスモス・宇宙)」などの音楽で有名です。デミス・ルソスもソロ・シンガーとして活躍しています。 アフロディテス・チャイルドの「Rain and Tears」はその原点となった曲です。日本ではあまりヒットしなかったのかも？

Roxy Music / Bryan Ferry - Avalon

ロキシー・ミュージックの頂点である同名アルバムのタイトル曲。緻密で繊細な音楽はロック史上に残る傑作です。 ちなみに、アヴァロンはイギリスの神話・伝説の島の名前です。日本にも「常世の島」（とこよのしま）の伝説がありますので、どこか似ています。島国共通の海の向こうへの畏怖と憧れかもしれません。 歌の内容はPVのように、パーティの後に、言葉を交わすことも無く引き寄せられる運命の女性・（時に破滅へと導くファム・ファタール＝アヴァロン）といった感じです。

Terry Jacks - Seasons In The Sun

ジャック・ブレルの　Le Moribondを英語にしたもの。邦題は「そよ風のバラード」とこれも意味不明。昔の歌の邦題は本当に雰囲気重視でした。 最終フレーズに、 We had joy we had fun We had seasons in the sun But the hills that we climbed were Just seasons out of time 「楽しかったね、愉快だったね、私たちはお日様の当たる中で、季節を過したね。でも、私たちが登った（hills）山々は、ちょっと季節外れだった。」とありますので、遭難したのでしょうか？ 内容は、死を前にして、楽しかった「お日様の当たる中」の思い出を歌ったものです。

The Band - The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down

ザ・バンドはボブ・ディランのバックバンドとしてスタートしたグループ。だから、あえてグループ名も「The Band」とシンプルそのものです。 スタンダードなアメリカン・ロックを重厚に聴かせてくれるグループでした。 この曲は解散コンサート「Last Waltz」のなかの一曲。南北戦争を歌ったもので、「北軍が南軍を追い払った夜、みんなこんな風に歌っていた"Na, na, na, na, na, na, ...... " 。・・・北軍は一番大切なものを持って行ってしまった。」という内容です。"Na, na, na, na, na, na, ...... "のフレーズが言葉に出来ない悲しみを上手に表現しています。ザ・バンドの味が良く出ている演奏なので好きな歌です。

Last Waltzのエンディング。マンドリン演奏を交えて、味わい深く静かに幕を閉じます。ザ・バンドの解散はアメリカのトラディショナルなロックのひとつの時代の終わりのような気持ちがしました。

Pink Floyd - One of These Days - live at Pompeii

アルバム「Meddle」B面トップの曲。題名は、日本語にすると「折があれば」というような意味でしょうか。 Pink Floydはアルバム「Atom Heart Moｔher」(邦題「原子心母」：そのまま英語を漢字にしただけ？！）や「Relics」「Meddle」「Obscured By Clouds」までは、ロック・ファンだけの人気でしたが、1973年「Dark Side of the Moon」で一躍世界的にもポピュラーになりました。

Neil Young - Heart of Gold

ニール・ヤングの「ハート・オブ・ゴールド」、邦題は「孤独の旅路」という意訳です。「孤独」と「旅路」、よく使われた言葉ですが、これはこれで、なかなか含むものがあって、歌の内容に合っています。 内容は「私は生きたい、黄金の心を与えたい、探し求めたい、・・・そして、私は歳をとってゆく。黄金の心を探し求めて、歳をとってゆく。」というもの。アメリカ人は金を探すことが好き（？）。それも踏まえて、「心」を探します。これは、アメリカ人の「雨にも負けず」です。（この部分、独断と偏見）誠実でストレートなメッセージはシンプルなメロディで歌うのが一番力強くて、伝わりますね。

Stray Cats - Rock This Town

Stray Catsは、ボーカル＆ギタリストのブライアン・セッツァー（Brian Setzer）を中心に1979年に結成されたグループ。当時、ネオロカビリーブームといわれたが、ブームがあったかどうか？パンク・ロック全盛前に時代錯誤のグループかと思って聴いたら、大違い！テクニック抜群、ロック・スピリット溢れる本物でした。もちろんアルバムを買いに行きました。 ブライアン・セッツァーは、親日家で、日本にもよく来るのでご存知の方も多いのではないでしょうか？

Culture Club Boy George - Do You Really Want To Hurt Me

カルチャー・クラブは1981年結成のイギリスのバンド。リード・ボーカルのボーイ・ジョージのファッション性もさることながら、ソウルフルな歌声と美しいメロディ・ラインによるこの歌は秀逸です。 邦題の「君は完璧さ」はなんのこと？どこから発想して、この題名が採用されたのか、いまだに理解に苦しみます。

Donald Fagen - I.G.Y.

ドナルド・フェイゲンのアルバム「The Nightfly」の中の曲。I.G.Yとは International Geophysical Yearの略で国際地球観測年のこと。50年代、60年代に夢見た科学の発達による夢のような世界をスタイリッシュに歌っています。未来がそんなにバラ色じゃないのは、百も承知。大人気ないなんて批評は的外れです。「The Nightfly」はアルバム全体がシニカルなユーモアとジョークを散りばめた世界。大人になった少年のための音楽です。「いい大人なんだから、このシャレ分かるだろ？」と言われている気がします。 この歌、21世紀の今でもオシャレなバーなどでかかっていますか？

Dire Straits - Sultan of Swing

ダイアー・ストレイツの「サルタンズ・オブ・スウィング」です。 マーク・ノップラー。デビューしたときから既に大物の貫禄です。こういう才能溢れる人が突然現れるから、世の中は楽しいですね。
