アンドルー・ロイド・ウェバーの楽曲も、「オペラ座の怪人」、「キャッツ」の「メモリー」に続いて、今回は「エビータ」のこの歌で三曲目です。
「アルゼンチンよ、泣かないで」 (Don’t Cry for Me Argentina) は、アンドルー・ロイド・ウェバー作曲、ティム・ライス（Tim Rice）作詞による1978年のミュージカル『エビータ』の中で最も有名な楽曲です。映画『エビータ』で、マドンナ扮するエヴァ・ペロン(詳しく知りたい方は、下のWikipediaを見てください。）がバルコニーで歌った「ドント・クライ・フォー・ミー・アルゼンチーナ」と言ったほうが、分りやすいでしょうか。映画の内容は、近代史上の人物なので、フィクションとしての賛否両論がありますが、この映画で、マドンナは、単なるポップス歌手ではなく、幅広い楽曲を歌いこなせることを証明しました。
ただし、このミュージカル・映画はアルゼンチンの人たちにとっては、それほど親しみを感じるものではないようです。エヴァ・ペロンはもう伝説的な人物で、敬愛の対象だったのです。言い変えれば、希望のシンボルとして心に残っている人です。ですから、あらためてその過去をあからさまにすること自体が反発を感じる原因となります。ちょうど新約聖書のマグダラのマリアの過去を再現しているような感じです。こうした人物をフィクション化することは、その人物のイメージを固定化してしまう危険性もあり、どのように描いても実際の人物の多様な側面を正しく表現することは出来ないという限界も感じられます。そんな意味では、エヴァ・ペロンを演じられるのは、エヴァ・ペロン本人か次に出てくるエヴァ・ペロン（そんな人がいるかどうかは分りませんが）しかいないのではないでしょうか？
この歌のベストスリー、ミュージカル『エビータ』で1979年トニー賞ミュージカル主演女優賞を受賞したパティ・ルポーン、マドンナで聴き比べてください。パティ・ルポーンは大統領夫人の役柄どおり、威厳に満ちて力強く、マドンナは少し甘い歌声で歌っています。
